A lifelong fan of clever wordplay, one of my favorite quotes goes, "yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that is why its called the PRESENT."
This being the season of giving set me to wondering, is it possible that being fully PRESENT for another person is the best gift we can give? Full, undivided attention where we actually listen for a change?
The other day I was meeting with a new client for the first time. A consulting hypnotist really needs to ask detailed questions and then listen carefully to the responses in order to do the job well since no two people are exactly alike.
A couple of minutes into this initial meeting I realized that there was noise problem in my office building that was distracting my attention somewhat.
Someone a few doors down had placed in the hallway this rather bizarre little Santa robot who shakes his hips lasciviously in time to an endless loop of one holiday song. Kind of maddening to tell the truth.
So I excused myself briefly, dealt with the problem (no, a sledgehammer was not involved, just a polite request) and I was then able to give the proper attention to the person sitting across from me.
When someone gives you his or her complete attention it shows a kind of respect that unfortunately has become kind of rare. A comment you will often hear people make about a charismatic person is that he or she "made me feel like I was the only person in the room."
The value of this makes perfect sense: human beings are essentially hardwired to make connections with fellow humans. We experience ourselves to a large degree through others. This is why being ignored or neglected can be so damaging even if other basic needs like food, shelter and safety are met.
Deep conversations are pretty much impossible with someone who "has to" answer every cell phone call or text message that comes in-no matter how trivial. And even without modern gadgetry like cell phones and creepy Santa robots constantly interrupting, the ability to really hear what someone else is actually saying is something that takes a bit of effort.
Ask questions and wait for the reply, don't have your answer formulated before they finish. Reflect back what you "think" they said and find out if your interpretation is accurate. Relax, tune out the distractions and be PRESENT.
This can be challenging, but trust me, it will be much appreciated by the people in your inner circle. Make sure your presence is a gift this Holiday Season.

Tuesday, November 25, 2008
My long time readers know that in past years we have discussed the need to be proactive during the Holiday Season to maintain mental and physical wellbeing. Some things we can do include
-Maintain adequate hydration, we tend to dry out in the winter.
-Get as much outdoor activity as possible-a lack of sunlight can have a negative effect on mood. Exercise causes the release of endorphins, our natural "feel good" biochemicals.
-Watch out for refined sugar consumption-the "sugar blues" is a real phenomena for people sensitive to its effects.
This year there is the added factor that more folks are experiencing worries related to the economic downturn.
These concerns are real, however worry does not encourage us to tap into our inner resources of determination, creativity or a realistic yet healthy sense of optimism, which is what we all need of more of at a time like this.
One of the greatest stress reduction tools we have is the ability to shift our perspective. If something upsets you ask "how else can I look at this so I can move forward in my life." Its easy to lose sight of this amazing ability that we have to truly change our minds for the better.
For example, you can remind yourself that that financial difficulties almost always have a way of being corrected over time. Or if you have to cut back on spending for awhile, so what? At least you have enough to eat and a warm place to sleep at night-which is a lot more than many people have.
Humor is perhaps the best way to shift perspective and to avoid taking life or ourselves too seriously. With that in mind, below is a list compiled by the legendary Swami Beyondananda on how to achieve enlightenment, enjoy!
Ten Guidelines to Enlightenment
1. Be a FUNdamentalist. Ensure that the FUN always comes before the MENTAL. Realize that life is a situation comedy that will never be cancelled. A laugh track has been provided and the reason we are put in the material world is to get more material from that track. Have a good laughsitive twice a day, which will ensure regularity.
2. Remember that each of us has been given a special gift just for entering, so you are already a winner!
3. The most powerful tool on the planet today is Tell-A-Vision. That's where I tell a vision to you and you tell a vision to me. That way, if we don't like the programming we're getting, we can change the channel.
4. Life is like photography -- you use the negative to develop. No matter what adversity you face, be reassured: of course God loves you.
5. It is true: as we go through life thinking heavy thoughts, thought particles tend to get caught between the ears and cause a condition called "truth decay." Be sure to use mental floss twice a day, and when you're tempted to practice 'tantrum yoga', remember what we teach in the Swami's Absurdiveness Training Class: don't get EVEN, get ODD.
6. If we want world peace, we must let go of our attachments and truly live like nomads. That's where I no mad at you and you no mad at me. That way there will surely be nomadness on the planet. Peace begins with each of us. A little peace here, a little peace there. Pretty soon all the peaces will fit together to make one big peace everywhere.
7. I know, great earth changes have been predicted for the future, so if you're looking to avoid earthquakes, my advice is simple: when you find a fault, don't dwell on it.
8. There's no need to change the world. All we have to do is toilet train the world and we'll never have to change it again.
9. If you're looking for the key to the Universe, I've got some good news, and some bad news. The bad news: there is no key to the Universe. The good news: it was never locked.
10. Finally, everything I've told you is 'channeled'. That way, if you don't like it, it's not my fault. But, remember: enlightenment is not a bureaucracy, so you don't have to go through channels.

Mind Control Language Patterns by Dantalion Jones-A Review

At some point when someone is studying hypnosis and related disciplines like NLP, you may begin to wonder if it is really possible to use communication skills in a covert way in order to influence others. What is really going on here and would anyone really admit this was possible if they could?
In a therapy or coaching situation it is a given that the client has consented to being influenced in an ethical way in order to move past problem states and towards desired goals. But are persuasion skills also used outside that setting on unwitting individuals?
Mind Control Language Patterns by Dantalion Jones is a comprehensive guide that explores a wide variety of verbal persuasion techniques from the diverse fields of hypnosis, magic/mentalism, cults, sales and military recruitment where the ability to use language skillfully spells the difference between success or failure .
It must have taken considerable effort to compile this material. Some of the different topics may be familiar to you, however this is the first time I have seen it all put together in an encyclopedic fashion like this. In my opinion, this a serious work for the person looking to serious improve his or persuasion skills (or to protect themselves against their misuse).
Each section of this 237 page volume examines a specific verbal technique in detail and provides some examples of how it is used. For those who would like to develop real-life applications of Mind Control Language Patterns, I would suggest taking your time with this book. Read through it once and then go through each chapter and develop your own notes and practice exercises. Eventually you will be able to apply this knowledge in a naturalistic manner.
Considerable attention is given to the methods of legendary psychiatrist Dr. Milton Erickson, who is considered by many to be the father of modern hypnotherapy. In particular his technique of “embedded suggestions“, is of great value in this situations where you want to bypass a person’s conscious resistance to change. Also covered is his famous method of hypnotic induction involving a handshake.
There are some who might be concerned with Jones’ exploration of “dark” mind control language patterns, where it is possible to intentionally implant negative thoughts and feelings in another. He does provide copious warnings against using them and states their inclusion is to teach the reader how to protect themselves against these tactics. This is not unlike how a law enforcement expose’ will often describe how a scam or other crime works. Yes, it could be an educational tool for the unscrupulous, however it can also inoculate potential victims too.
All in all, I consider Mind Control Language Patterns by Dantalion Jones a worthwhile addition to your library. After all if you don’t control your own mind, what is preventing someone else from doing so?
Jones has put together a really cool website about Mind Control Language Patterns with text, audio and video if you would like to learn more, pay a visit through the link below.

Hypnosis for Insomnia:You Better Sleep!
“If only I could get to sleep ” moans the already exhausted and highly stressed single mom. Yet the harder she tries to fall asleep the more awake and annoyed she becomes. Even if she falls asleep now she will have only 4 hours before she has to get the kids to the bus stop. Where is the justice? Well at least she is in good company as public health statistics indicate that a large percentage of American adults have some sort of sleep problem.
Getting an adequate amount of sleep and rest is vital for overall mental and physical well being. There is also some research that suggests that a lack of sleep can be a factor in overweight and obesity.
When a sleep problem is persistent and severe it is most important to have a medical exam as sometimes insomnia can be a symptom of a more serious underlying physical or emotional disorder. With this type of problem ruled out, there are some options you can pursue to improve your sleep quality.
There are any of a number of sleep aids on the market, some requiring prescriptions and others available over the counter. Yet most are not intended for long term use, have potentially problematic side-effects and do not address the usual root cause of being unable to fall asleep-unrelieved tension.
Some safe and natural ideas for improving sleep you may wish to consider:
-Many people are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than they realize. Avoid caffeinated foods and beverages 5-6 hours prior to your scheduled sleep time and see if this helps.
-While alcoholic beverages may seem to have a relaxing effect, they tend to disrupt sleep quality if taken in excess.
-Nicotine is a stimulant and you should consider quitting altogether-a Certified Hypnotist can help you with this process. At the very least, cut back on your smoking in the evenings.
-Exercise is a great stress reliever, however it can be a stimulant for some people if performed too soon before bedtime.
-Make sure your sleeping area is cool and well ventilated.
-A warm bath or shower before bed can help you fall asleep more easily.
-Avoid watching the news or anything else that may be disturbing for at least one hour prior to your scheduled bedtime. We are in a naturally heightened state of suggestibility as we drift off to sleep and when we first wake up-be careful what you dwell on at those times!
When sleep problems are the result of tension, what the person often discovers is that it is challenging to simply turn off the worrying and other “mental chatter” that they engage in throughout the day. It is similar to driving along the highway at 60 or 70 miles per hour and then trying to slam on the breaks.
So you want to establish a routine of gradually slowing down prior to your desired bedtime. And as previously mentioned, by all means avoid watching the news right before you fall asleep. Why? By and large a news broadcast is chock-filled with negativity that we are for the most part helpless to do anything about.
There is also some concern that the flickering light given off by the TV may have a stimulating effect on some individuals and hamper the ability to fall asleep. (Look at the wall opposite a TV screen in darkened room to see the strobe-like effect it has).
As someone who has had difficulty falling asleep you are probably aware of the Rule of Reversed Effort, although you probably didn’t call it that. Long known to hypnotists, this rule states “that the harder we try to do something we are not confident about, the harder it becomes to accomplish.” Don’t try to force yourself to sleep as this will only create tension and discouragement as this is actually impossible to do. Getting relaxed sets the stage for sleep, which then happens on its own.
Learning how to use a relaxation technique about 15-30 minutes prior to your intended bedtime will greatly increase that chances that you will get better nights sleep. Self-hypnosis, meditation and prerecorded guided imagery audio programs are all safe and affordable remedies for the sleep challenged.
The YOU:BETTER SLEEP audio program can help you improve your sleep quality. It is intended for you to use shortly before bedtime to help set the stage for a good night's sleep by reducing worry and mental chatter. Remember, you cannot force yourself to fall asleep, that only makes things worse. Rather, relax and it will happen on its own.
There is no fee for this program. You will receive a free subscription to the Creative Calm Online Newsletter, dedicated to "helping people who want to help themselves" and filled with fascinating mind/body information in each issue. Rest assured your email address will be held in the strictest confidence and you can cancel your subscription any time you want-no questions asked.

The Pumpkin and the Walnut-A Teaching Tale

(Note: this story involves a fictional character named Mullah Nasruddin. The humorous tales about him are popular in the Mid East and in particular amongst the Afghan people).
One warm day, Nasruddin was relaxing in the shade of a walnut tree. After awhile he pondered the huge pumpkins growing on vines nearby and the small walnuts growing on a towering tree.
"Sometimes I just cannot understand the ways of God" he thought. "Why on earth does he let tiny walnuts grow on such a majestic tree and enormous pumpkins on those delicate vines!"
Just then a walnut fell from the tree and smacked Nasruddin square on top of his bald head. He got up at once and lifted his hands to the heavens in supplication.
"Oh my God! Forgive me for my questioning ways! You are the one who is all-wise. Where would I be now if pumpkins grew on trees!"
Throughout the ages there has been a lot of talk about the "secret plan of the universe"-usually by people who make the unlikely claim that they have somehow figured it out!
Yet this story reminds us that there are mysteries that are beyond our current level of comprehension. And this has relevance to people who are goal-oriented.
Some of the aforementioned individuals who claim to have cracked the secrets of the universe will tell you that if your intentions and beliefs are strong enough, literally everything is possible because the "universe" wants to grant all our wishes. Is that so?
If we go along with the idea that there is some sort of unseen and benevolent wish-granting entity at work in our lives, wouldn't it be wise enough to recognize that some of them would in the long run be harmful to ourselves or the greater good ?
As a wise rabbi once said "God always answers your prayers and sometimes the answer is no!" Stay motivated and inspired but be flexible enough to know that sometimes you have to shift your intentions.

Reviews for Nine Hypnotic Tales
I am happy to report that my latest ebook Nine Hypnotic Tales-Fascinating Stories for Your Positive Transformation is being well received, especially by some of my respected colleagues in the hypnosis profession. Amongst these are:
"Nine Hypnotic Tales is a wonderful collection of elegantly told stories that provide metaphors for change. This is a wonderful book(let) that will not only give you effective stories, but that provide wonderful creative stimulation for your own story creation. James Malone has once again put together material that truly helps people." Kevin Hogan, Author of The New Hypnotherapy Handbook
"James Malone's new E-book: Nine Hypnotic Tales transforms nine well known teaching stories to a healing art form." Malone's re-telling and commentary are sure to work their magic as you read and digest each and every one of them. I highly recommend this book"-Michael Ellner, Co-author, HOW TO GET UNSTUCK
"It's so true how the stories relate to our inner beings... I think the tales are incredably effective in getting a point or idea across.... I think that these tales are great, and I would probably use them over the more traditional fairy tale stories to read to my children, cause even at a young age they still pick up on the little morals or leasons of the tale... And what a better time then when they are young to teach them these prospectives...." Amanda Irvine, Hypnotherapist, CA

Hypnosis: What to Expect Afterwards
There is some confusion amongst the general public about what you can expect after going through the hypnosis counseling process. In this article we will try to provide some clarification because having a proper set of expectations will greatly increase your chances of success. We will look at the two most popular sessions: weight loss and quitting smoking.
With weight loss, remember that age, gender and medical history all influence the rate at which you will reduce. Your body is beholden to the laws of nature. Generally speaking, a safe range is to reduce 1 to 3 pounds per week. However, there is an overwhelming body of evidence that tells us that the most important result is long term lifestyle changes.
Weight loss clients for the most part experience one of three outcomes after hypnosis counseling. Some find it that it takes almost no effort to eat and exercise in healthy way-it is as if they had always had those behaviors. Some encounter brief temptations to lapse into old negative patterns and then easily correct themselves. The third category is where the person has to deal with the occasional "mental battle" but then refocuses on the new positive self-image and gets back on track-all three are acceptable when you consider what the potential end result is!
Now are there those people who do not have one the three outcomes just described? Yes, unfortunately there a few individuals who do not have a mature outlook as to what hypnosis will be able to do for them. This is the person, who will tell you that he or she went out and ate a half gallon of ice cream right after their first appointment to see if hypnosis would stop them. Hypnosis can help, but only if you are willing to help yourself.
A similar situation is encountered with quitting smoking. Those who quit smoking with hypnosis will also usually encounter one of three outcomes. The first group discovers that its as if they never smoked and find is surprisingly easy to quit. Others will encounter will experience brief urges to smoke but then quickly remember their commitment to quit and stop themselves. The third group will find themselves struggling a bit initially but persist because of the reward that quitting bring.
There is a fourth category worth mentioning too. This is the person who lights up immediately after their appointment and says that hypnosis "doesn't work." What this individual has proven is that he or she is capable of wasting their money and the hypnotist's time since even the heaviest smoker could quit for a day on their own! Hypnosis can help dramatically, but once again, only if you are willing to help yourself.

Stress, Stress and More STRESS!
Lets see, we have rising fuel prices which are sending out shockwaves throughout the rest of the global economy.
There have floods of biblical proportions in the Midwest and record foreclosures brought about by the predatory behavior of the lending industry.
And talented yet troubled British R&B singer Amy Winehouse has somehow given herself emphysema at the ripe old age of 24. These are all forms of stress, right?
Well, actually no. To be precise the news stories listed above are actually stressors, not stress. What is the difference?
A stressor is a stimulus that has the potential to create a stress reaction in a person or group of people. However, two people can encounter the same form of adversity and have totally different responses to it. And therein lies a very important thing to remember when it comes to managing your stress levels, you do have some degree of choice in the matter.
How about we create a hypothetical example to explore this idea. Your next door neighbor Greg sees rising fuel prices as proof of a dark global conspiracy that will ruin our way of life and his in particular. As you might expect he seethes with anger at the very thought of this perceived injustice and he has not been sleeping well as of late. His stomach has been giving him considerable grief too. Further fueling his stress, he is a loyal listener of a talk radio station that encourages listeners like him to call in and vent their opinions on matters like this.
Your other neighbor Mary is not thrilled with paying more during her weekly trip to the gas station either. However, the way she looks at it, this situation may be a blessing in disguise since it will encourage more people to seek out more fuel efficient alternatives and to practice conservation. That and she figures we are all in it together and things will probably work out OK.
Greg and Mary are being charged the same price at the pump, yet Greg is paying a far higher price when you think about it. His mental and physical stress are creating discomfort in the short term and if left unchecked, some potentially serious health problems in the long term. All because of a difference in perception.
Abraham Lincoln was quoted as saying that “we are only as happy as we make up our minds to be.” Its not a matter of Mary being right and Greg being wrong since both viewpoints could be argued successfully. However, it makes little sense to hold onto perceptions that create stress while doing nothing to correct the stressor.
With all the stressors flying around these days, someone might be tempted to tell us to “take a deep breath.” And as a matter of the fact that person is probably me!
We’ve all heard how proper breathing can help us to control our stress levels. Yet few of us were ever told how to master this simple yet vital stress management skill.
To this end I have released a new report Relaxation Breathing Explained, a brief yet concise guide on how to master this basic stress control skill. It is in digital PDF format and available for instant download for a stress free investment of just $1.97- or about what you pay for a half gallon of gas. Information you can use for a lifetime.

Hypnosis for Pain Relief
This may hurt a little: Hypnotised patient has two teeth removed without anaesthetic
By Andrew Levy as reported in the Daily Mail
Last updated at 9:49 AM on 04th June 2008
After avoiding the dentist for the best part of a decade, Leslie Mason was in pain and knew he needed urgent treatment. Two rotten teeth and four roots had to be removed but he could not afford to pay £400 for the work and was also dreading the discomfort he would have to endure.
He mentioned the dilemma to his friend John Ridlington, a qualified hypnotist, who revealed he had been discussing the potential of hypnosis to a dentist he knew.
A quick check confirmed Mr Mason could act as a guinea pig to test the theory and have the treatment free.
He underwent a two-hour procedure without anaesthetic, remaining conscious but in a trance-like state, and reported feeling nothing more than a 'little sting'. He is believed to be the first person in the country to have major dental surgery using hypnosis instead of anaesthetic.
'It was incredible,' said Mr Mason, 54, a DIY store worker from Colchester, Essex. 'There is no worse pain than that inflicted by dentists but I didn't feel any. The dentist had to dig away at the rotten roots that were right up into my jaw. 'There isn't anything I wouldn't have done under hypnosis now.'
Mr Mason, a father of seven, had previously used hypnosis to quit a 40-a-day smoking habit. He added: 'Not everyone is as susceptible as me to hypnosis but it's an area that should be exploited further. There are so many benefits.'
Mr Mason's last visit to a dentist before the recent check-up had been in 1998. During the operation on May 20 he had two upper right molars removed along with their roots, plus two roots from teeth which had been pulled in the 1980s.
Mr Ridlington spent 45 minutes getting him into a relaxed state of mind beforehand by making him visualise his favourite subject - historic battle reenactments - to distract his mind from the pain. Mr Mason also had to imagine a dial numbered one to ten, one representing no pain and ten pure agony. Whenever he felt a twinge, he mentally turned the dial back to one.
Mr Ridlington, 59, from Dunmow, Essex, said: 'We all have the ability to control pain with our brains. 'They control everything about our bodies and our subconscious is the most powerful part - it controls our breathing and the blood pumping through our veins. 'Hypnosis taps into the subconscious mind. It's all about mind over matter.'
The operation was performed by Dr Bhavin Bhatt, who runs the Smile and Wellbeing dental practice in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. He said: 'The hypnosis was 100 per cent effective. We're now exploring the possibility of offering tooth transplants under hypnosis.
Studies have shown that using hypnosis instead of anaesthetic can reduce recovery time after surgery. It also removes the chance of possible side-effects from anaesthesia. But the technique's long association with stage acts has kept it at the margins of mainstream medicine.
Hypnoanaesthesia, where the patient enters a deep trance state and is told he will feel no pain, has been used to help burn victims manage their agony and ease fears over surgery and childbirth.
The British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis said that even heart operations had been carried out under hypnosis. In April, hypnotherapist Alex Lenkei had an 83-minute operation without anaesthetic on his arm to treat osteoarthritis.
Afterwards, he revealed he had been aware of his surgeon making a four-inch incision into his wrist and chiselling the bone to remove a tendon. He added: 'I heard everything he was saying to his assistants and anaesthetist but there was no gossip. It was a shame - I was hoping to hear something juicy.'

Quirkology and the Q Test
Before we go any further, take the Q-Test first. Using the index finger of your dominant hand, trace an imaginary Q on your forehead. Did you point the little downward tail towards the left eye or to the right eye? What is the significance?
U.K. psychologist Richard Wiseman in his book Quirkology, says that this test can help you determine how good you are at lying! He states that “this quick test provides a rough measure of a concept known as self-monitoring. High self-monitors tend to draw the letter Q in a way in which it could be seen by someone facing them, with the tail of the Q facing to the left. Low self-monitors tend to draw the Q in a way in which it could be read by themselves-with the tail facing to the right.” So you might ask what in the world does this has to do with lying?
Wiseman continues, “High self-monitors tend to be concerned with how other people see them. They are happy being the center of attention, can easily adapt their behavior to suit the situation in which they find themselves, and are skilled at manipulating how others see them. As a result they tend to be good at lying. In contrast, low self-monitors come across as being the “same person” in different situations. Their behavior is guided more by their inner feelings and values, and they are less aware of their impact on those around them. They also tend to lie less in life, and therefore are not as skilled at deceit as high self-monitors.”
Dr. Wiseman has used this fun test with groups for years. He has noticed that a small number of people upon learning the workings of the test, convince themselves that they traced the Q in the opposite direction that they actually drew it in order to fit the type of person they want to be. He adds, “as a result the test provides rough indicator of how good you are at deceiving both yourself and others.”
So did the results surprise you? However, it doesn’t matter whether the little tail pointed to the left or the right. Since its just us here-in all honesty most of us need a little help now and then to get where we want to be. Are your habits making you happy? Are your stress and confidence levels where they should be? If not, please check out the affordable transformational ebooks being offered at www.theholisticmall.com on a wide variety of mind body topics.
P.S..-Below are links to two of my favorite books by Dr. Wiseman. Quirkology, referenced in the article above is a treasure trove of interesting and little known psychological facts and pecularities. The Luck Factor explores the differences between lucky and unlucky people and gives practical suggestions on how to bring more good fortune into your life. I have personally experienced good results implementing his techniques

Oprah and Past Life Regression
Today’s episode of Oprah opened to renowned psychiatrist and author Dr. Brian Weiss hypnotizing the studio audience and regressing them to past lives. Was this a valid experience or some sort of parlor trick?
Oprah was joined by her cohort cardiologist Dr. Mehmet Oz, who while admittedly skeptical due to his scientific background, offered balanced and open-minded commentary and was himself regressed during the program.
The show’s guest Dr. Weiss is the author of perhaps the best known book on the phenomena of past life regression, “Many Lives-Many Masters.” A psychiatrist and department head at a prestigious hospital, Weiss’ had patient named Catherine that exploded his worldview and led him to his life’s true work.
Catherine had been afflicted with numerous crippling fears and a year of conventional psychiatric treatment yielded no appreciable results. Dr. Weiss decided to use hypnotic regression as an alternative and lo and behold Catherine was soon reliving past lives, although neither she as a Catholic or he being Jewish, had any previous inclination to believe in reincarnation. What was important was that Catherine symptoms began to improve.
At first puzzled, Dr. Weiss was curious as to what was at work here. The clincher for him was when Catherine gave him information about his deceased father and infant son that would have been nearly impossible to gain otherwise.
After the audience’s regression experience, several member shared what they encountered. One African woman stated she had been a white nun, to which Dr. Weiss attributed to the soul’s needs to experience different genders and races in order to develop. Another woman reported recalling a previous incarnation as Native American woman who was murdered and thus separated from her children. In this lifetime this woman is childless and has some fears regarding motherhood, something that according to Dr. Weiss is common amongst people who have been separated from their children in past lives and do not wish to undergo that pain again.
Later in the program a previous guest funeral director Robert Leon was regressed to past lives in an effort to understand both his nightly dreams about flying, his rocky relationship with his sister and his intense dislike of having anything pressing on his chest.
The flying dreams apparently stemmed from his becoming frozen with fear as a fighter pilot and as a result was shot down and killed. In a similar vein, the difficulties with his sister seemed to arise from his also being frozen with fear while she was being sexually assaulted in a past life and that we was killed by someone who did not want him to be a witness. He apparently was crushed to death by his assailant in spite of his not intervening. Like Catherine, Robert reported feeling better after the work.
Dr. Weiss did a good job of separating the essence of hypnotism from the mythology; that it is a state where the mind becomes focused while the body relaxes and in doing so we can get past the conscious clutter that keeps us from knowing our inner selves.
So does it matter whether past life regression is real or not? As Dr. Oz noted, the Western mind is addicted to data and tends to see such practices as the “wishful desires of desperate people.” However, he added that something does not have to be understood to be valuable and there have been many individuals who have been enriched by their hypnotic experiences, those that work with past lives as well as the current one.

A couple years back a prospective client called me regarding my hypnosis counseling services. When we got around to discussing fees, he balked at my rate of $100 per visit and stated "Yeah, but the guy with ad in the paper today only charges $49.95!"
I inquired if he was referring to the large group hypnosis seminar for quitting smoking and weight loss that was making the rounds in our area to which he replied in the affirmative. With that I explained that if he attracts 100 attendees his actual rate is about $2,497.50 per hour for that two hour program. And it is really comparing apples to oranges since in that environment the presenter cannot provide any individualized attention to a specific group member if needed.
This is not to say that there is no value to group hypnosis programs. In fact, I myself have run a number of them related to smoking cessation, weight loss and stress reduction through my county college's Adult Education programs and have truly enjoyed facilitating them. However, there is some consumer confusion as to what are the differences between group hypnosis and private sessions. What are some of the benefits and drawbacks you should be aware of?
First and foremost, always remember that hypnosis unlocks potential already resides in your subconscious mind, a hypnotist has no special magical powers-just a skill set that helps people improve their lives. What can a properly run group program offer you? In the past I have been lucky enough to sit in on some professional development seminars given by Robert Otto, the leading expert on running hypnosis programs and I learned quite a bit.
A good group program can offer you really useful information about the dynamics between the conscious and subconscious mind, tools to maintain a positive outlook, a hypnotic induction that introduces you to therapeutic trance and suggestion along with a self-hypnosis technique to reinforce what you have learned afterwards. There is also the camaraderie of being around others with a similar predicament that some find motivating. Certainly a program that has these elements can be a good investment of time and money.
Amongst the drawbacks is that it can be difficult for some people to relax and focus when they are sitting amongst a crowd of strangers. Also, when there are a large number of participants, the hypnotic approach cannot be customized to any one individual's needs-instead it is "one size fits all." And some people would really benefit from ongoing reinforcement, which a traveling group program cannot offer. Personalization and ongoing support are part and parcel of the private session experience.
Although there are those individuals who offer group hypnosis programs in an ethical way, sadly to say there is a small minority who do not. The warning flag is when the program is actually a vehicle for promoting other products and services. There was one outfit that was soundly slammed by consumer protection authorities here in New Jersey for running a hypnosis seminar that basically was nothing more than an excuse to employ high pressure sales tactics on attendees in order to promote their expensive line of vitamins and supplements.
However, there is nothing wrong with the seminar producers offering things like audio self-hypnosis programs or workbooks for reinforcing the suggestions at home. But if it is a hypnosis seminar, the product line should be related to hypnosis!
Although private sessions do cost more, with certain issues that added investment is worth it. This is especially true with healthy weight loss since that is an issue that requires time and persistence for it to be solved. And although you might ask if you can afford private sessions, it might be helpful to consider if you want to also consider the costs of remaining the same.

Enough With the Insults Already!
A new book find I was lucky enough to stumble upon a few weeks back is "The Shaolin Workout-28 Days to Transforming Your Body and Soul the Warrior's Way."
It was it was written by Sifu Shi Yan Ming, a 34th generation Shaolin monk who emigrated to the United States in 1990's and who has carved out a reputation as one of the premiere kung fu instructors alive today. His center, the USA Shaolin Temple in NYC, boasts a large number of students, including quite a few celebrities.
Although the book contains a progressive exercise program that promotes flexibility, balance and strength, it also contains a healthy dose of the Sifu's philosophy as well. One passage really struck a chord with me in regards to many of the clients I see at my hypnosis counseling practice. Sifu states:
"Everyone is handsome. Everyone is beautiful. Sadly, everyone is not aware of that. This is one of the reasons we so often fail when we try to "improve" ourselves through a new exercise program or a new diet. We begin, in effect, by insulting ourselves: 'I'm f at, I'm out of shape. I need to go on a diet. I need to go to the gym more often.' If you start out with such a negative opinion of yourself, it's no wonder you ultimately fail. What kind of motivation is that?...remember that you're not improving yourself. You don't need to be improved, God made you! You're just polishing yourself, to let your true beauty shine."
There is an interesting concept known as "away" and "towards" motivation. Away motivation is where we move away from something because it causes pain or distress. And as you can probably guess, towards motivation refers to the motion we make towards those things that will make us happier and healthier.
Although away motivation does have its value when it gets us to take initial action, it does a really poor job in keeping us motivated in the long run. Why?
For starters, if you have been subject to significant verbal abuse by any of your significant others, by making the change, you are in a sense validating their opinion. And who wants to do that!
Second, once you have made the change (i.e. getting in better shape) the initial motivation is removed and chances are you will slide back to the old patterns. So it is important to be clear in your own mind what the benefits will be once you get where you want to be.
Lastly, as any hypnotist can tell you, the subconscious mind cannot imagine a negative. "I will stop being such a loser" forces you to think about being a loser! Be positive in your self talk, refuse to entertain negative thoughts and keep on polishing that diamond in the rough!

Wheee! 46 Trips Around the Sun!

There is a celebratory mood here this week as I observe my 46th trip around the sun (my preferred euphemism for birthdays-and an accurate one too when you think about it!)
And yes, birthdays are often associated with doing something fattening or immoral, yet I wanted to share something with you that is a bit different.
Motivator Software
One of the online companies I am affiliated with, MySelfHelpHub.Com.is giving away a program for your computer that can help you reach your personal development goals.
One of the primary secrets of success is persistence and people often fail because they don't give the process of change enough time. The Motivator Software is a sophisticated tool that allows you to craft personalized messages that will regularly appear on your PC for as long as you like.
As far as I can tell MySelfHelpHub.Com is giving this away in order to get you interested in some of their other offerings and I have found them easy to do business with. To learn more or to download your copy, please visit The Motivator Software.

You Get What You Pay For?
There was an interesting factoid in the news recently concerning the placebo effect. For those who are not sure what that means, simply put it is when an inert medicine like a sugar pill has a therapeutic effect.
When pharmaceutical companies are having a new drug tested that they wish to introduce to the market, they are required to do what is what is known as a "double-blind test." This is where one group receives the actual drug and the other a placebo. Neither the test subjects nor the staff handing out the pills know who is getting what. The medicine has to have a statistically significant higher level of benefit than the placebo in order to be considered effective or valid.
And the interesting thing is that placebos often do appear to provide a significant benefit. If they create a sense of positive belief and expectation in a person, this can initiate the body's own natural healing resources.
Dan Ariely, a professor of behavioral economics at MIT recently noted in his book Predictably Irrational (Harper) that a placebo pill will provide more relief when it is priced at $2.50 rather than 10 cents.
Since the placebo effect originates in the person's belief system, it is only natural that the higher price intervention will seem more potent. After all, "you get what you pay for" right?
Unfortunately, the belief system of the placebo responder is one that places a lot of faith on an external influence while devaluaing the one he or she already has inside.
It seems to me that we all will be a lot better off when it becomes more commonly accepted that health is the natural state of the body and mind and that we should further explore the force that is within all of us. And contrary to what you may have been lead to believe, hypnosis is not a placebo. Ideally it will teach you how to tap into something you have had all along.

What's Your Excuse?
I received a reviewer's copy of The Forbidden Book of Getting What You Want by J.K. Ellis this week.
Ellis is really swimming against the current tide with this one in that it promotes an attitude of personality responsibility and getting past EXCUSES when pursuing the kind of life you desire.
This is in stark contrast to a slew of self-help works of late that maintain that somehow you will be rewarded for wishful thinking without any further effort on your part-a recipe for disaster in many cases. Yes, it is helpful to create a clear mental image of what you truly want, however as the old saying goes, "if you are going to grow potatoes, you are going to have to pick up a hoe!"
Experience has shown that one of the best ways to help people overcome motivational blocks is to convert their "whys" in to "hows."
Traditional therapy dictated that insight was an essential key to personal transformation.
"Why do I continue to smoke?"
"Why can't I stop overeating?"
"Why has success eluded me?"
Yet even if you do manage to answer these questions, what are you left with? A pile of EXCUSES! Insight is at best a starting point, it is action that will really make the difference.
Now let's take a shot at turning a why into a how. "How can I quit smoking?" suggests that you can quit smoking, it is just a matter of figuring HOW. "Why can't I quit smoking?" implies that you can't and encourages you to search for an EXCUSE.
The Forbidden Book is based on the premise that when you accept personal responsibility and let go of of EXCUSES and blame, you create a kind of trap that forces you to succeed. A really good quote from the section on excuses goes"
"Life is not based on the quality of your EXCUSES!"
And there really is no excuse not to learn more about the Forbidden Book either!

The Giants Big Win!
Except for those who conscientiously avoid any news related to sports, you probably heard about the Giants winning the Superbowl against the New England Patriots last night-the latter team going into the game with a perfect, undefeated season.
It was an exciting game to say the least and both teams really did give it their all. To me, the Giants win was particularly inspiring because it was a tangible demonstration of a comeback. Early in the season many fans were calling the for the Giant's management to give coach Coughlin and quarterback Manning their walking papers due to lackluster performance.
Yet somehow these two men were able to find a way to turn things around and lead the Giants to victory in what is considered one of the greatest accomplishments in the world of athletics.
Now most of us will never compete on such a high level. Yet who hasn't had the experience of a poor start coming out of the gate or stumbling mid season when it came to losing weight, quitting smoking or pursuing some other worthwhile goal? Did you follow the natural tendency to become discouraged and give up?
Its my educated guess the Manning and Coughlin probably were deeply discouraged too at the beginning of this season. It is not easy to face up to the fact that you are not living up to you true potential. Yet they dug deep, focused on what they truly wanted and persisted towards their desired outcome. And you should consider doing the same.

5 Out Of 100 Weight Loss Tips
First and foremost, people don't realize that what they drink is the first step in losing that first 10 pounds. In fact, most people don't know that when they feel hungry, they may actually be dehydrated and they are really thirsty, not hungry. Water is remarkable as well. Over 66% of your body weight is nothing but water. This is also why water plays an important role in weight control.
So TIP #1 is:
Drink plenty of water. It is recommended that you drink 8 glasses per day, but that may take you some time to work up to. Your body needs a whole lot of water. Water doesn't just flush all the toxins out of your body, but it makes you feel better and healthier. When you drink a lot of water you just begin to feel fit and this is the motivation you need to lose weight.
The best thing about water is you can drink as much as you want because it has no calories at all. When you're drinking a lot of water, you eat less as well because you won't feel as though you are starving to death. Remember, if you feel hungry, try drinking a glass of water first and you'll realize you were probably just dehydrated and not hungry at all.
The whole 8 glasses a day rule is really something you should strive for. The best way to do this and to measure your water intake is to buy a jug from the drug store or grocery store that is designed to hold exactly 8 glasses of water. These are great weight loss tools because you can fill them up, freeze them and as it melts throughout the day you have fresh and cold water. Or, if you don't mind your water room temperature you can drink it that way as well. All that matters is that you're getting in the water your body needs.
TIP #2: Start off your day with a fresh, clean glass of water. As soon as you get up in the morning, drink one down. This will help your body to get going because it won't be fighting through dehydration. Also, after you drink a glass of water you won't need to eat such a large breakfast. A glass of water wakes up all the digestive juices in your body and gets it well lubricated. You can always have your morning coffee or tea, but be sure to have a glass of water afterwards. Caffeine dehydrates you and you want to ward off dehydration.
TIP #3: Drink a glass of water before you sit down to eat. Water will naturally make you feel fuller so you don't have to eat as much food.
TIP #4: Have a glass of water while you eat as well. Take a drink after each bite and you will feel full more quickly so you can leave the table feeling satisfied without feeling bloated. Drinking water while you eat will also help your food to settle more quickly, which also helps you to feel full faster.
TIP #5: Do your best to stay away from soda. All sodas are sweetened with lots of sugar. The more you can cut out of your diet the better. Also, diet soda is still soda. It may not have as much sugar, but it has other chemicals and components that are not good for your body either. If you drink a soda, counteract it with a glass of water. Remember, caffeine dehydrates you as well. Decaffeinated sodas still have caffeine in small amounts as well and just as much sugar, so they are not much healthier either.

The Worst Week of the Year?
A few years back a psychologist in Scotland purported to have calculated that January 23 is the worst day of the year (3rd Monday in January).
He based this conclusion on a couple of factors.
-Mondays in general are considered the most depressing day of the week.
-Winter weather has really settled in, the lack of sunlight which affects mood has been ongoing for quite awhile now.
-There is the post-holiday letdown and the holiday credit card bills have come due.
-In a great many situations the healthy New Years Resolutions have been abandoned and subsequent feeling of discouragement and disappointment ensue.
So yes, it would seem that there are some tangible reasons why the third week in January may not your favorite (or mine for that matter). However, the most important thing you can do is to TAKE ACTION. If you stopped exercising, start doing even just a few minutes a day. If you haven't been able to stop smoking-GET HELP (Hint: hypnosis really works well this)
You also want to surround yourself with positive influences. This can take the form of people who are motivated and upbeat. The right kind of media can help too, not the kind that makes you feel helpless. Like the kind that tells you "the third Monday in January is the worst of the year and there is nothing you can do about it, that's just the way it is."
One "media outlet" you won't get that from is my monthly Creative Calm E-Newsletter. Instead, each issue explores various self-improvement topics that can help you lead a happier and healthier life. In Your Dreams Pal!
"Last night I had the strangest dream!" How many conversations in your life have started that way? People are fascinated with the movies that play in their head while they're sleeping.
Some believe dreams can predict the future. Others say dreams depict real life. Still others believe that dreams are a manifestation of what we want to be.
Interpreting dreams has evolved over the years to what some consider an art form. We spend one-third of our lives sleeping.
In the average lifetime, six years is spent dreaming. That's more than 2,100 days spent in a different world! Every night, we spend an average of one or two hours dreaming and usually have 4-7 dreams per night.
Consider some of these other facts about dreams and dreaming:
-Everybody dreams. EVERYBODY! Simply because you did not remember your dream does not mean that you did not dream.
-Dreams are indespensable. A lack of dream activitiy can mean protein deficiency or a personality disorder.
-Men tend to dream more about other men, while women dream equally about men and women.
-People who are giving up smoking have longer and more intense dreams.
-Toddlers do not dream about themselves. They do not appear in their own dreams until the age of 3 or 4.
-If you are snoring, then you cannot be dreaming.
-Blind people do dream. Whether visual images will appear in their dream depends on whether they were blind at birth or became blind later in life. But vision is not the only sense that constitutes a dream. Sounds, tactility and smell become hypersensitive for the blind and their dreams are based on these senses.
